Our Rating: 8.2/10
Superlatives:
Best Wanton Destruction: Fire truck wreaking havoc on the Vegas strip
Hottest Iteration of Nic Cage: Butterface tank top + acid washed jeans
Our Reviews:
So we're all just okay with serial killer Steve Buscemi being on the loose again because he didn't murder a child immediately. Huh.
This cast was stacked and so was Nic Cage in that wifebeater and jeans. Put a bag over his head and enjoy it for what it is.
I liked that Nic Cage's character was basically just 'two days from retirement' when he had to deal with all the shenanigans by the other prisoners since he was scheduled to get out shortly after the flight. Steve Buscemi made a friend and became the film's most engaging character with little to work with from the script.
Con Air is a film that asks the question, "What if we took a normal Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Reykjavik, but upgraded everyone's seats and eventually just crashed it into Las Vegas?" This movie also managed to shoehorn in some proper pre-9/11 miscarriages of justice against our nation's veterans and some de rigeur white savior/black martyr tropes a la Bubba Gump. A true victory of filmmaking.
Steve Buscemi's head on Nic Cage's body. Perfection. Also, for some reason Nic Cage's involuntary manslaughter conviction ended him up with straight up serial killers and psychopaths and maybe this movie was intended to be a thought-provoking indictment on the criminal justice system?
