Am I supposed to like the philandering pilot protagonist?
We don't get to see where all the people that were "raptured" went, so it is really hard to say who got the better end of the rapture stick in this movie. Cameron's lack of clarity on this point really made me question his faith, and ability to tell us why heaven is so great -- assuming that is where he thought the raptured people went in the movie.
This is like a Lifetime movie directed by a born-again Christian version of Michael Bay that managed to somehow blackmail Nic Cage and Chad Michael Murray into being involved.
I think the strangest thing I've come to realize about Evangelical religion in America is that despite the fact Jesus swore off all trappings of wealth and usury He always seems to have enough cash in the bank to make movies that will violently club you over the head with a faux-virtuous passion play. Nic Cage has tax bills to pay - did Jesus start knocking off 7-11s?
I think the moral of this story was that we should all go to church or Nic Cage is going to try to land the plane you're on in the dark.
