Our Reviews:
This movie’s central premise is some kind of unexplained technological phenomenon that causes parents to lose their shit and try to kill their own children. While it starts off slow, the latter half sees Nic Cage going full Cage, including ranting and raving about anal beads, sobbing hysterically while chewing on his own fingers, and chasing his young son around the house with a Sawzall while legitimately making dog noises. It’s a slog to get there—and as Molly pointed out, the child characters aren’t even likeable (Molly on a scene between the mom and her teenage daughter: “So is this a movie about how supernatural forces cause them to kill their children, or just the rational product of this conversation?”) so you can’t even really root for them. However, the latter half mostly makes up for it.
A totally understandable account of the natural and logical consequences of having terrible children. Nic Cage was disappointingly normal throughout, but the final scene in which he chased his children around the house ranting about anal beads more than made up for an otherwise low-key performance. A strong answer to The Family Man, which was far less believable as a movie.
A world in which a strange frequency suddenly makes every parent want to take the sensible approach to the world's overpopulation problem by murdering their children through any means necessary. An absolute triumph of vision.
A "dark comedy" that either didn't have any jokes, or thought we were supposed to laugh at a woman trying to murder her newborn baby?
Lock up your daughter, lock up your wife (if child-bride aged), because Nic Cage's murderous "Dad" is back in town, and playing pool in the basement just isn't good enough for him anymore. "Dad" and his fellow "I didn't know I was pregnant" friends, who found out they were in fact very pregnant awhile ago, all go out to clear out the non-rent paying populous to try and relive a little bit more of their youth before they have to cash out to the big register in the sky themselves.
