Our Reviews:
Mortal Kombat was a fun video game specifically because it was over the top violent and gory. Now imagine if you took the characters from that game and had them fight each other, but never included a drop of blood or any of the characters’ insane finishing moves, such as pulling a skeleton out of somebody’s body, because you wanted to make sure the movie was rated PG-13. Behold, the Mortal Kombat movie. I may be extra salty because Raiden was my favorite character, and this movie made the choice to turn him into some kind of Gandalf-looking, long-haired wizard who’s just around to say wise things or some shit instead of actually fighting anybody. The most redeeming part is the banger of a soundtrack, which you will remember and treasure if you were between the ages of 10 and 20 in the year 1995. The movie itself is not totally unenjoyable, but definitely a wasted opportunity.
Pretty hard to top the mid-90's eponymous installment of this classic franchise, and I can safely assure you this iteration did not. It did, however, do a few things right. For example, I don't recall buzzsawing a person in half from face-to-crotch. But did it have a frenetic techno title track? I mean how do you fuck that up?

The new one is the best movie. The old one is weak except for Mrs. Sampras, but still worth a watch.
To be clear: video game movies are generally just ... not a good idea. Then you take a franchise based on gore and violence and take out the gore and violence, and you're left with whatever this was. Wow. Not good, friends.
