IMDB Rating: 6/10

Our Rating: 7.6/10

Our Reviews:

In what ended up being a surprisingly compelling murder mystery/action flick, Nic Cage plays a corrupt Atlantic City cop who ends up having to uncover a conspiracy after an assassination takes place at a boxing match. He displays fantastic cocaine energy for the first 20 minutes or so of the movie and then settles into a relatively subdued performance. I actually followed and enjoyed the plot, and it gets bonus points for Gary Sinise as Nic Cage’s best bud and a late 20s-aged Carla Gugino inexplicably sporting a late 50s-aged haircut. No complaints about this one—it was a diamond in the rough.

I don't remember any specifics from this movie, but I do remember being entertained throughout. One of the more enjoyable Nic-Cage-As-Unconventional-Detective movies, which is really saying something in a saturated field

Any time Cage gets to play a proper sleaze I know I'm in for a treat and this film was squarely in that wheelhouse. This was, however, the rare time he plays a sleaze with a heart of gold, something IRL Atlantic City is sorely in need of. My only real criticisms: his collar could have been just a smidge wider and more obnoxious, and Carla Gugino's short hair made her look like a 3rd grade teacher.

A murder mystery movie that forgot to have a good guy and also forgot how to be a mystery. And a movie. They should've kept the tidal wave at the end.

If this movie taught me one thing, it was that getting a lot of money and power through corruption and murderous practices doesn't mean all that much if you get caught or shot dead. Gary Sinise was still pretty cool though.
