Our Reviews:
This movie is essentially 30 minutes of typical slasher film setup followed by an hour of Nic Cage wildin’ out on evil Chuck E. Cheese-esque animatronic characters. In between scenes of him beating the shit out of these animatronic characters, a bunch of idiot teenagers get killed, but don’t worry—not a single one of them has any level of backstory or redeeming qualities to make you care about them. The pinnacle of the movie, for me, was a prolonged montage in which Nic Cage plays a pinball machine in an increasingly manic, amorous fashion, including totally out to lunch dance moves.
I truly think that this whole movie was just Nic Cage flexing at the camera, having duped Hollywood into paying him what must have been an insane amount of money for a phoned-it-in acting performance and no lines. That said, I really enjoyed watching all of the annoying adolescents get murdered by animatronic puppets with nary a plausible motive to be found for any of the characters.
I'll be honest. This movie had me at "Nic Cage psychotically murders killer animatronic robots at a Chuck E. Cheese knockoff then has sex with a pinball machine," but somehow it didn't get all that quite right.
The soaring love story of a man and his pinball machine.
Finally, Cage finds a character that perfectly matches his ability to speak and communicate entirely through his actions and expression, to smile only with his eyes, to smize—if you will. Cage also channels this powerful expression into the trust and drive of his hips as he channels his loving devotion for the vivacious pinball machine into the camera, and out to the audience. I think there were other scenes and actors too, but... who cares?
